How To Do A Professional Eyelash Extension Fill - eslashes

Performing a lash extension fill is a little different than a brand-new set. In this article we’re going to guide you through the exact steps of a lash refill, and how to perform them.

Although a lot of the steps remain the same, there are 2 major differences between a lash set and a lash fill.

A lash fill will not take nearly as long as a new set.

A fill should take less than half the time it took to apply a new set. For example: If a new set took 2 hours, the fill should take about 45 mins - 1 hour.

How long do lash extensions last before a fill?

Lash fills should be booked every 2-3 weeks. Our natural lashes are constantly shedding, and new lashes are coming in. As a result, the lash extensions grow out and shed with the along with the natural lashes. Each individual’s lashes will shed at a different rate, and some people can go 4 weeks between fills. The average person will need their lashes filled every 3 weeks.

How many lashes should you have for a fill?

Most technicians require that you have at least 40% of your lash extensions remaining. Any less than 40% will take more time and should be booked as an extended fill at a higher price point.

Grown out lashes from the previous appointment need to be removed before applying new extensions.

Lash extensions grow out with our natural lashes. If grown out lash extensions are left on too long, they will start to bend and twist. This is not only uncomfortable for the client, it also adds too much weight to the natural lash. This can be prevented by removing grown out extension during a fill.

How do you remove eyelashes when preforming a lash fill?

We don’t want to use a lash removal cream, since that can remove neighboring extensions that we want to keep in place. Grown out extension can be easily removed during a fill using the “peel back method” or the “banana peel technique”.

What is the banana peel method for eyelash extensions?

This removal method is done by:

  • Holding the natural lash with one tweezer
  • While using a second lash tweezer to grab hold of the extension
  • Peel the lash extension backwards (like you would a banana peel)
  • The extension should gently pop off
  • Use gentle but firm pressure and make sure the client is comfortable at all times

Lash Fill Steps

Steps that should be performed during an eyelash extension fill

  1. Have the client arrive 5 minutes early with thoroughly cleaned lashes. If the client shows up with makeup or oil you can offer them two choices. -The client can use an eye washing station to clean the lashes themselves. -You can perform a lash bath (you can charge extra for this)
  1. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap thoroughly in front of the client for at least 20 seconds.
  1. Double check with the client that they want to continue with the same look as last time.
  1. Apply under eye pads.
  1. Apply under eye tape.
  1. Remove any grown out or twisted lashes using the peel back technique.
  1. Prime lashes and dry them for 10 seconds with your lash fan.
  1. Brush through the lashes with a mascara wand.
  1. Draw out lash map.
  1. Drop a small amount of adhesive onto your jade stone.
  1. Isolate one natural lash while using your other tweezer to dip the extension in glue.
  1. Apply the extension to the isolated natural lash 1 mm away from the lash line.
  1. Use a lash mirror to check your work for any criss-crossed lashes or gaps in the lash line.
  1. Dry lashes with a fan for 1 minute per or a nano mister for 15 seconds per eye. If you are using a bonding or curing product, follow the package instructions and do not use a nano mister.
  1. Brush lashes with a mascara wand.
  1. Check for any “stickies” (lashes stuck to the under-eye pad or lashes stuck to bottom lashes).
  1. Remove stickies if needed.
  1. Check with the client to make sure everything feels good.
  1. Gently remove the under-eye pads and tape.
  1. Hand your client the mirror to inspect their fresh lash fill.
