Understanding Lash Extensions

What Are Lash Extensions?

Lash extensions are synthetic or natural fibers that are individually attached to your natural eyelashes to enhance their length, volume, and curl. These days most places use synthetic lashes since they hold their curl better and are cruelty free. They provide a dramatic transformation, giving you a fuller and more youthful appearance without the need for daily eye makeup like mascara.

Benefits of Lash Extensions

Lash extensions save you time in your daily makeup routine, enhance your natural beauty, and give you a polished look with minimal effort. Extensions stay fresh for weeks at a time and you can keep your lash look fluffy and fresh by booking regular fills. This makes them perfect for every-day use but also so great for vacation! I love traveling with minimal makeup products because my lash extensions give me the makeup look that I love.

Why Facials Are Important

Benefits of Facials

Facials are an excellent way to maintain the health of your skin. They help remove dead skin cells, unclog pores, and hydrate your skin, leaving you with a fresh and glowing complexion. Regular facials are also a great way to reduce fine lines and improve the overall appearance of your skin.

Types of Facial Treatments

There are various types of facials, including deep cleansing facials, hydrating facials, chemical peels, and anti-aging treatments. Each type of facial targets different skin concerns and provides specific benefits.

Can You Get a Facial with Lash Extensions?

Yes, But with Precautions

You can get totally get a facial with lash extensions! However it does require a few precautions to protect your lashes. Here are the best ways you can protect the longevity of your eyelash extensions while still getting facial treatments.

Pre-Facial Preparation

Communicate with Your Beauty Therapist/Esthetician

Always let your aesthetician know you are wearing lash extensions so they can avoid getting oil-based cleansers near your lashes.  A certified lash stylist or beauty therapist experienced with lash extensions will know how to handle your lashes during the facial treatment. However, if they don't know you can just request that they keep products away from the lash line and the eyelid. If possible, oil-free cleanser, and other oil-free products are the best option during a facial (although I know this isn't always possible!).  One thing that is SO important is to always use oil-free makeup remover since it's coming in direct contact with the lash line.

If you are buying skincare products after your facial, look for products that are oil-free. Personally I find that getting a little oil near the lash line won't destroy your lashes one time. However it's always better to be safe than sorry especially with things like eye creams.

Schedule Your Lash Appointment

Plan your lash appointment around your facial appointment. It’s best to get your lashes done after your facial to avoid any potential damage during the facial treatment. Keep in mind that lash extensions can't get wet for 24-48 hours. However, if your lash tech used a superbonder during the lash application they should be ok to get wet right after the lash extension service. Check with your lash artist to make sure you have waited enough time before getting your new lashes wet. Also just a side note in case you didn't know: you should always remove your contact lenses for you lash appointments.

Protecting Your Lash Extensions During a Facial

Avoid Excessive Heat and Steam

Excessive heat and steam can weaken the adhesive bond of your lash extensions. Request your beauty therapist to avoid using hot towels, steam rooms, or any treatment that involves high heat near your eye area. Of course I don't want all your lashes to fall out but I will say I have personally gone in saunas, steam rooms, and had facials all while wearing lash extensions. So at the end of the day, it's up to you if you want to take the chance. A lot of excess water and steam may not be the best thing for your lashes, but mine have held up pretty well.

Use Lash-Safe Products

Ensure that the facial cleanser and other facial products used during your treatment are lash-safe. Avoid oil-based products as they can break down the lash adhesive. Opt for water-based products and oil-free cleansers to protect your lash extensions.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a Facial with Lash Extensions

Follow these easy steps to help keep your lash extensions safe during a facial or spa treatment.

Step 1: Communicate Your Needs

Before the facial begins, communicate your needs to your beauty therapist. Let them know you have lash extensions and discuss any concerns you have about the treatment. If you are getting a massage, be careful with your lashes in the face cradle/face hole in the massage bed. You may want to wash the eyes first or wear a sleep mask to protect the lashes when you're laying stomach down.

Step 2: Gentle Cleansing

The first step in any facial is cleansing your face using a gentle touch. Ensure that a mild cleanser or a gentle cleanser is used, avoiding the eye area where your lash extensions are. Micellar water is a great option for removing makeup and excess oil without affecting the lash adhesive. It's better to rinse the entire face using a damp cloth or facial sponge instead of using running water.

Step 3: Avoid Direct Contact with Lashes

During the facial, your beauty therapist should avoid direct contact with your lash extensions. This includes avoiding the application of facial products, steam, and hot towels near the lash line.

Step 4: Use a Soft Cloth

A soft cloth or facial cloth should be used to gently pat your face dry. Avoid rubbing or tugging at your lashes to prevent premature shedding.

Post-Facial Care

Avoid Oil-Based Products

After your facial, continue to avoid oil-based products in your skincare routine. Oil can be one of the biggest culprits in poor retention. Oil-free makeup removers and oil-free cleansers are the best way to maintain the longevity of your lash extensions.

Keep Lashes Dry

Avoid getting your lash extensions wet for at least 24 hours after having them applied. This allows the adhesive to fully set and prevents weakening of the glue bond.

Additional Tips for Maintaining Lash Extensions

Regular Touch-Up Appointments

Schedule regular touch-up appointments with your lash technician to maintain the appearance of your lash extensions. Regular maintenance is essential for keeping your lashes looking their best.

Proper Care at Home

Follow a proper care routine at home to extend the life of your lashes. Use a clean face wash that is gentle and free from oils. Washing the lashes every day with a lash cleanser also helps to prevent getting an eye infection. Avoid excessive heat and be mindful of the products you use around your eye area. If you wear a lot of makeup on your eyelids, use a cotton pad with oil free makeup remover to wipe the eyelid before cleansing your lashes. A micro fiber cloth can be used instead of the cotton round as well.

Understanding the Impact of Different Skin Types on Facials and Lash Extensions

Oily Skin

If you have oily skin, you may need to take extra precautions with your lash extensions. Excess oil can weaken the adhesive bond, so it's essential to use oil-free skincare products and regularly cleanse your face to remove excess oil.

Dry Skin

Dry skin can benefit from hydrating facials, but be cautious of the products used around your lash extensions. Ensure that moisturizers and other facial products are lash-safe and oil-free.

The Importance of Using the Right Skincare Products

Lash-Safe Skincare Products

Using lash-safe skincare products is crucial for maintaining the longevity of your lash extensions. Avoid products that contain oils, heavy creams, and other ingredients that can break down the lash adhesive.

Choosing the Right Products

Opt for water-based products and gentle cleansers that are formulated for sensitive skin. Micellar water is a great option for cleansing your face without affecting your lash extensions.

Popular Beauty Treatments to Avoid with Lash Extensions

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels involve the use of strong acids that can be harsh on your lash extensions. Avoid getting chemical peels or any other aggressive skin treatments that can damage the adhesive bond. However, it's important to consult with your skin-care professional to get their expert opinion before deciding.

Steam Rooms and Saunas

Excessive heat and steam can weaken the lash adhesive, causing your extensions to fall out prematurely. Avoid steam rooms, saunas, and other high-heat environments to protect your lashes. Like I said, personally I have gone in steam rooms and saunas and my lashes held up! I did wait 48 hours before using the steam and sauna to make sure the eyelash glue was fully cured.  But be mindful that this could cause some of the lashes to fall out over time.
